Working with the client’s needs and collaborating with designer Brooks Atwood of POD Design, this complete new 2,800 sf. house and front-yard pool on a hillside in Silver Lake was designed for a couple with three children. This two-story house is sited on the lot so that it is set into the hillside at the upper portion of the hill in order to take advantage of the views to the Hollywood sign and the Griffith Observatory. Like a boat’s prow, the white stucco and concrete block house protrudes above toward the view with floor-to-ceiling glass at the master suite and exterior deck carved out of the north side, where the two halves of the upper floor bend to create this shifted-box design. The ground floor which contains the open living space with living, dining, and kitchen all connected, has a singular interior floating box containing a pantry and powder room, minimal windows to the side neighbors, and glass along the entire front. A large central skylight washes light two stories down over the kitchen and spills light into the entire first floor. Twenty feet of glass sliding doors open up to the front deck and bio-pool from this level for a seamless indoor-outdoor feel. Upstairs, there is access to the back, upper yard and four bedrooms, including a master suite with walk-in closet and large, open bathroom.
